Arriva trials new electric technology in Leicester
In partnership with Wrightbus, Arriva will proudly introduce its first trial of a fully electric bus in Leicester. Over a 9-day period, the Double Decker WrightBus Electroliner will be serving customers on some of our key routes across the city.
This marks an investment by Arriva of over £10 million to introduce an initial fleet of 22 electric buses operating regularly in Leicester from 2023. This investment was made possible by the support of Leicester City Council in securing funding from the Department of Transport.
Andrew Godley, Commercial Director for Arriva, said: “Our mission is to become the leading passenger transport partner and we believe that electric buses are integral to making that a reality. This is a very exciting time for Arriva and we’re working closely with Leicester City Council, building on our newly formed Leicester Buses Partnership, in order to help Leicester City Council deliver on their sustainable strategic vision. We were pleased to have Councillor Adam Clarke, Deputy Mayor join us on board our maiden journey.
“In recent years we have already invested significantly in upgrading our Leicester fleet to Euro 6 low-emission engines. This exciting progression towards electric vehicles is new for Arriva in Leicester so securing a demonstrator vehicle will give us valuable insight. Through this 9-day trial, we’ll be putting the electric bus through its paces so we can see what it’s like to drive and maintain.”
The arrival of electric buses to Leicester forms part of Arriva’s zero emission programme. The newly introduced Arriva Zero Emission Institute will accelerate Arriva’s journey to net-zero across Europe, working in partnership with cities and regions.
The WrightBus Electroliner arrived and will be operating for 9 days from Tuesday 31st , operating on routes 47 & 48 (Leicester to South Wigston) and on route 50 & 51 (Leicester to Narborough).
We hope customers will notice a smoother, quieter drive whilst on board the bus. And of course, they can ride with ease knowing this bus will be making no emissions at all. We’ll also be encouraging customers to provide feedback using the hashtag #electricLeicester. So, if you spot the bus, give it a try!
Arriva is one of the largest bus operators in Leicester. We form part of the Leicester Buses Enhanced Partnership and have recently introduced the multi operator tap on, tap off initiative – the easy way to pay for your bus travel at the best price.
