Service Improvements within Tees Valley

From 29th March 2026

From Sunday 29 March, we will be introducing a range of positive service improvements across the Tees Valley. These changes will benefit customers who currently travel on Services 5A, 28, 29, 62, 64A and 81, while also welcoming new customers from villages between Stockton and Darlington through an extended Service 10.

The changes have been carefully developed to reflect evolving travel patterns and to respond directly to customer feedback and requests for improved connections. The result is a more connected bus network, enhanced peak-time frequencies on some routes, and new journey opportunities for many communities.

From the same date, the usual seasonal frequency increases on Services X93 and X94 will also take place, alongside minor timetable adjustments to Service 7 in Stockton and Service X22 within County Durham.

Changes to Service 5A and 64A and NEW Service 65 (Middlesbrough to Lingdale)

+

Service 5A will be withdrawn, and Service 64A - currently terminating at Flatts Lane - will be renumbered as Service 65 and extended hourly via Flatts Lane and the A171 to Guisborough and Lingdale.

This extension creates new direct links and strengthens connections between communities across the area. It also allows peak-time services between Lingdale and Middlesbrough to be improved to every 30 minutes, compared with the current hourly service.

Existing Service 5A customers in Lingdale, Boosbeck, Margrove Park and Charltons should look out for Service 65 instead. Services will operate hourly during Monday to Saturday daytimes, with half-hourly journeys during morning and afternoon peaks - representing a clear improvement on the current peak timetable.

Customers currently using Service 5A along Ormesby Bank, Cargo Fleet Lane and Cranmore Road will continue to be well served by Service 5, along with nearby Services 8, 9 and 63.

These changes also introduce a much-requested daytime link between Guisborough, Eston and South Bank on Mondays to Saturdays, making journeys quicker and more convenient. Timings have been designed to support education travel, with one journey in each direction additionally serving Lawrence Jackson School.

Within Guisborough, Service 65 will operate via The Avenue, Hutton Lane and Rectory Lane, bringing stops on Thames Avenue back into the bus network in response to local requests.

Passengers currently using Service 64A will see only minor timetable changes and should look out for Service 65 instead.

Services 64 and 65 will continue to work together, as Services 64 and 64A do today, to provide buses up to every 15 minutes between Eston and Middlesbrough via South Bank.
Passengers who currently use Service 64A will see only minor timetable changes to reflect the longer route and should look out for Service 65 instead.

Services 64 and 65 will continue to work together, as Services 64 and 64A do today, to provide buses up to every 15 minutes between Eston and Middlesbrough via South Bank. This combined frequency will continue.

Changes to Service 10 (Darlington to Whinbush)

+

Working with Tees Valley Combined Authority, Service 10 will be extended once per hour beyond Whinbush to serve Sadberge, Bishopton, Redmarshall, Carlton, Thorpe Thewles, Stillington and Great Stainton.

Extended journeys will follow the current Service 10 route before operating a clockwise loop via Whinbush and then via Great Burdon to Sadberge. Buses will then serve all listed villages before returning via Sadberge and Great Burdon and continuing to Darlington via the normal anticlockwise loop of Whinbush.

This enhancement provides a new travel option for residents of these villages, while also benefiting existing customers in Whinbush. The hourly clockwise loop around Whinbush Way and Barmpton Lane will allow for convenient local journeys, including trips to and from ASDA, as requested by customers and residents.

Changes to Service 28/28A and 81 (Middlesbrough to Markse Estate)

+

Services 28 and 81 will be combined to form a single, longer route operating from Middlesbrough via Marton Road, Easterside, Marton, Nunthorpe, Guisborough, Dunsdale, Kirkleatham, Redcar, Redcar East and Marske Estate.

Service 81 will be replaced, with all buses operating as Service 28.

Running hourly, the new combined Service 28 will cover the full routes of both existing services while creating new connections across Guisborough. The service will continue to operate via Hunters Hill between Middlesbrough, Nunthorpe and Guisborough before extending to Redcar and Marske Estate along the current Service 81 route.

This change creates new journey opportunities, including direct links between Marton, Nunthorpe and Redcar. Residents in west Guisborough will also benefit from the return of an all-day direct service to Redcar, currently only available at peak times.

Service 28A will continue to operate its existing route and frequency but will see timetable changes to help address ongoing congestion in the Nunthorpe and Marton areas.

Changes to Service 29 and NEW 29A (Middlesbrough to Marton and Nunthorpe)

+

In partnership with Tees Valley Combined Authority, the supported section of Service 29 between Marton Manor and Marton (Cypress Road) will be enhanced to additionally serve Coulby Newham Parkway Centre on an hourly basis during Monday to Saturday daytimes.

Instead of two identical Service 29 journeys per hour, services will operate as one Service 29 and one Service 29A, maintaining the existing 30-minute frequency between Middlesbrough & Marton Shops. Service 29 will continue via its current route to Cypress Road, while Service 29A will operate via Gunnergate Lane, Coulby Newham Parkway Centre and Stainton Road.

This new Service 29A variation provides a direct daytime link between Marton and Coulby Newham.

Evening and Sunday journeys will continue to operate as they do currently, extending to Nunthorpe where required.

Changes to Service 62 (Middlesbrough to Redcar)

+

We are pleased to reintroduce a Sunday and Bank Holiday daytime Service 62 between Middlesbrough and Redcar.

Following customer feedback highlighting the lack of a Sunday service, an hourly service will be introduced on a trial basis from the end of March to provide greater flexibility and improved travel options.

In addition to this, most Monday to Saturday daytime journeys will be revised run up to 5 minutes earlier than they do now, so passengers are encouraged to check their usual bus time.

Changes to Service X93/X94 (Middlesbrough to Whitby and Scarborough)

+

The usual seasonal increase in frequency on Services X93 and X94 will commence from 29 March and run through to early November, providing enhanced summer services between the Tees Valley, Whitby and Scarborough.

Other timetable changes

From the same date, Service 7 between Yarm and Stockton will operate to a revised timetable, with no changes to route or frequency. Service X22 between Stockton and Peterlee will also operate to a revised timetable, with particular changes to weekday morning journeys.

These adjustments are designed to help address increasing congestion and improve reliability.

We look forward to welcoming customers on board and hope these improvements make travelling around Teesside even easier and more convenient.
