Changes to Arriva bus services in the Kirklees area

19 April 17

During November and December 2016, we consulted with local communities in Kirklees, Bradford, Calderdale and Leeds to identify opportunities to revise our current services in the Kirklees area to better cater for their travel demands.

We received around 400 responses and from 20th May we will be making some changes to our services based upon the feedback received. This includes new express afternoon peak trips between Leeds, Cleckheaton and Brighouse and a bus running between Leeds and Gildersome via the motorway to provide express links to Birstall and Heckmondwike.

We will be reviewing the feedback in more detail during the spring and intend to make some further minor changes to our services in the area in early September.

The table below lists all our services in the Kirklees area. Alongside the service number is a summary of the changes which will be made from 20th May:

  • The 16:40 from Leeds to Halifax will run 5 minutes earlier throughout.

256

  • This service will now operate from stand N in Bradford Interchange.

268/268A

  • Minor changes will be made to the weekday afternoon timetable between Bradford and Dewsbury to help improve reliability.
  • Journeys from Heckmondwike to Bradford will be extended back to Dewsbury at 05:25 on a weekday and 06:00 on a Saturday, to partially replace some trips on 282.
  • This service will now operate from stand H in Bradford Interchange.

278

  • A revised timetable will be introduced on weekdays and Saturday, with most trips after mid-morning running slightly later from Halifax and Dewsbury.

280

  • A new service linking Dewsbury and Thornhill.
  • Runs from Queensway Arcade, through the bus station and onwards to Thornhill like the current 281/282/283. This preserves existing links from the Markets area to Thornhill.
  • This service replaces 281/282/283 in this area. It will operate every 12 minutes on weekday daytimes, every 15 minutes Saturday daytimes and every 30 minutes evenings and Sundays.
  • As a result of these changes, delays in Bradford, Birstall and Batley will no longer impact services around Thornhill, as they do on the current though services.
  • Trips towards Thornhill will depart from stand 4 in Dewsbury Bus Station.
  • Trips towards Dewsbury town centre will depart from stand 9 in Dewsbury Bus Station.

281

  • All journeys from Birstall now terminate in Dewsbury, with the Thornhill area being served by new service 280.
  • On Monday to Saturday daytimes, this service starts at Fieldhead Estate and will operate around every 30 minutes, combining with service 283 to provide a bus around every 15 minutes between Batley and Dewsbury.
  • This service will now operate on Sundays, early in the morning and in the evening, replacing service 282. The service will operate hourly and extend from Fieldhead to Birstall Retail Park to improve access to these leisure facilities from Dewsbury and Fieldhead.
  • Buses will depart from stand 10 in Dewsbury Bus Station.

282

Due declining passenger numbers and large areas of duplication with other Arriva services, this route will no longer operate. Some services will be extended or re-routed to offer replacements for existing 282 customers:

  • Extra early morning trips on 268/268A will leave Dewsbury at 05:25 on weekdays and 06:00 on Saturday to cater for customers travelling to Dewsbury and District Hospital.
  • Service 213 will divert via Chestnut Avenue, Manor Way and Dark Lane to provide a Monday to Saturday daytime replacement service.
  • Extra trips on 281 will replace morning, evening and Sunday trips on 282.
  • 280 will replace 282 from Dewsbury to Thornhill on Sundays and in the evening
  • A Metro local service will be rerouted to cover some stops in the Green Lane area. Customers on Birkdale Road and Green Lane can also catch service 268/268A from Halifax Road or 212/213 from Staincliffe Road for journeys towards Dewsbury and the hospital.

283

  • All journeys now operate Bradford to Dewsbury only, with the Thornhill area being served by new service 280.
  • On Monday to Saturday daytimes, this service will operate around every 30 minutes, combining with service 281 to provide a bus around every 15 minutes between Batley and Dewsbury. On Sundays and in the evening, the service will continue to operate hourly.
  • This service will no longer serve Batley Bus Station on journeys towards Bradford. The current route in Batley can result in significant delays to both shorter and longer distance journeys.
  • The service will now operate from stand N in Bradford Interchange.
  • Buses depart from stand 10 in Dewsbury Bus Station.

X25

  • Weekday afternoon peak journeys on 225 will be replaced by new journeys on service X25. These services will leave Leeds at 17:15 and 17:45.
  • After picking up at Boar Lane, Neville Street and Great Wilson Street, buses will operate via the motorway, non-stop to Birkenshaw Bar.
  • Customers for Hartshead and Clifton village centre can purchase through fares on these journeys, with both buses continuing from Brighouse to Hartshead crossroads as service 225.

X29

  • This new weekday service replaces service 219 and will operate direct between Heckmondwike and Birstall.
  • The service will follow the same route as service 219 up to Leeds Ring Road, but then operate along the M621 to and from the city centre.
  • Please note: the morning route of service X29 is for a trial period of three months. Depending on traffic levels on the A62 and Leeds ring road, it may be reviewed in early September.
