Top Safety Award for Dewsbury's Buses
Arriva Yorkshire is celebrating after winning gold at the UK Bus Awards for its initiative ‘Driving a strong safety culture’.
The company took gold in the ROSCO Award for Innovation in Road Safety which recognises innovative contributions towards safety and safe driving in the bus industry.
Arriva Yorkshire’s Dewsbury Depot introduced a safety programme which has led to an innovative and consistent approach to training. Parts of the training include live ‘on set’ role play reconstructions of serious road incidents which help employees understand the risks as well as their responsibilities when out on the road. After just 18 months the company has seen remarkable results.
The judges were impressed with the outputs from this pilot scheme in an area of the bus industry that’s not usually known for its innovation.
Kim Purcell, head of operations at Arriva Yorkshire, said: “The UK Bus Awards are highly sought after and it’s fantastic to be recognised for Arriva Yorkshire’s commitment to safety in the bus industry.
“Our new Driving a Strong Safety Culture initiative was created in consultation with our drivers based on their feedback and we’re encouraged by the positive reception and success it has achieved so far.”
Mark Yexley, Chairman of the UK Bus Awards, said: “We would like to congratulate Dewsbury on an initiative that has embraced a different way of doing things, and one that’s really working too. Well done to the whole team.”
