North Kiirklees bus service improvements

Big improvements…

We’re proud to announce that from Saturday 23rd February we’re making some big improvements. There’s a full summary below, but here’s a few of the big ones!

Service 229

  • Following your requests for a faster journey, we’ve revised the route to travel more direct between Heckmondwike and Birstall. That means that you can expect to save 14 minutes on a typical journey!
  • We’re doubling the number of departure between Heckmondwike and Leeds, and adding in more evening journeys too
  • Extra buses will be joining the route, finished to a high specification
  • Connections to other services at Heckmondwike Hub have been improved

NEW Service 200
NEW Service 201 201A

  • We’ve revamped our services via the Morley corridor following your feedback. The routes are simplified to just 200 and 201, with a 201A for some early morning and late evening journeys.
  • Journeys have been retimed to make them more reliable, and more evenly spaced departures mean that you’ll have a 200, 201, 202 or 203 between Leeds and the White Rose Centre every 7/8 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes
  • A new link to Cleckheaton is introduced on Sundays too, giving even more people easy access to the White Rose Centre

Service 202 203

  • We’ve added an extra bus into the route at peak times, to provide a more robust service despite growing congestion.
  • More evenly spaced departures mean that you’ll have a 200, 201, 202 or 203 between Leeds and the White Rose Centre every 7/8 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes

Service 254 255

  • Journeys have been retimed to make them more reliable, and provide more evenly spaced departures
  • We’ve tweaked the routes, to serve Heckmondwike Hub in both directions on the 254 so you can connect easier, and to speed up the journey by sending the 255 around the 254 route in Gomersal.

Service 268 268A

  • We’re rolling out a new Monday to Friday daytime timetable, similar to the current Saturday timetable, with a bus every 15 minutes running the full route from Wakefield to Bradford.
  • All journeys will pull into Heckmondwike Hub, in both directions, to make connections onto other services easier.

Service 281

  • We’re extending this service to serve new areas by continuing from Fieldhead to the Birstall Shopping Park.

NEW Service N9

  • You told us you love the extra 229 on Friday and Saturday evenings, so it’s becoming a special Nightrider N9 that runs via Batley and extends to Cleckheaton

Summary of Changes

Here’s a summary of changes for all routes. Full timetables will become available over the next few weeks.

119/120    Wakefield - Ossett - Batley

  • We’re not making any changes to this service in February.

126/127    Dewsbury - Ossett - Wakefield

  • We’re making minor changes to the weekday afternoon timetable, some trips will run up to five minutes earlier and some trips will run up to five minutes later.

128/130    Dewsbury - Wakefield

  • A small number of trips which are not well used will no longer run, and some trips will start further along the route. To make things simpler, the 130 is renumbered 128A. This service is run with financial support from WYCA (Metro).

200    Leeds - White Rose - Morley - Birstall - Gomersal - Cleckheaton

  • We’re introducing new service 200 to replace part of the 220 and 222 routes. New service 200 will run every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes, and hourly on Sundays too following requests from customers for links between Cleckheaton and the White Rose centre on a Sunday.
  • The route of the new service follows the current 220/222 route between Leeds and Gomersal Hill Top. Then we’ll use Oxford Road and follow a route around ‘West End’ estate. From the end of Woodlands Road we’ll then drop down Spen Lane into Cleckheaton.
  • A fully revised timetable gives us more recovery time in Leeds, which will make the timetable more robust.
  • We’ve also ensured that buses are more evenly spaced between Leeds and White Rose shopping centre - there will be an Arriva Bus every 7 or 8 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes.

201/201A    Leeds - White Rose - Morley - Batley - Healey - Heckmondwike

  • We’re introducing new service 201 (with evening and early morning variant 201A) to replace part of the 221 and 223 routes. New service 201 will run every 30 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes, and hourly on Sundays too.
  • The route of the new 201 service follows the current 221 route between Leeds and Batley. The route of the new 201A service follows the current 223 route between Leeds and Batley (via Howden Clough). Both services then use the current 229 route via Healey to Heckmondwike.

202/203    Leeds - White Rose - Dewsbury - Mirfield - Huddersfield

  • We have revised the timetable to make the service more reliable. An extra bus has been added to the route at peak times. We’ll still run generally every 15 minutes, and the extra bus will help us recover any lost time due to growing congestion.
  • We’ve also ensured that buses are more evenly spaced between Leeds and White Rose shopping centre - there will be an Arriva Bus every 7 or 8 minutes on Monday to Saturday daytimes.

205    Pudsey - Morley - Dewsbury

  • Buses will now run to a more standard pattern, a bit like on a Saturday. There are no changes to the route.

209    Leeds - New Farnley - Gildersome - Adwalton - Birstall - Heckmondwike

  • This service will no longer run, but there are alternative options for most customers.
  • Between Leeds and New Farnley, our 254/255 services run up to every 15 minutes. Between Leeds, Gildersome, Birstall and Heckmondwike, revised service 229 will offer more direct connections up to every 15 minutes.

212/212A    Dewsbury - Hospital - Batley - Wakefield

  • Some evening trips, which are provided with financial support from WYCA (Metro) are withdrawn due to low usage.

213    Dewsbury - Hospital - Batley - Morley

  • Service 213 will be extended to Morley, replacing part of First Bus service 54. There will be a new timetable and some journeys will no longer run. This service is run with financial support from WYCA (Metro).

220    Leeds - White Rose - Morley - Birstall - Gomersal - Cleckheaton - Huddersfield

  • This service will no longer run, but there will be alternative options for most customers. New service 200 will cover links between Leeds and Cleckheaton, and new service 228 will cover links between Cleckheaton and Huddersfield. More details are listed below, under the new service numbers.

221/223    Leeds - White Rose - Morley - Batley - Carlinghow - Heckmondwike - Norristhorpe - Mirfield

  • This service will no longer run, but there will be alternative options for most customers. New service 201 will cover links between Leeds and Batley. New service 271 will cover the section between Batley and Heckmondwike via Carlinghow Lane, and new service 261 will cover the section between Heckmondwike and Mirfield via Norristhorpe. Services 261 and 271 will run with financial support from WYCA (Metro). More details are listed below, under the new service numbers.

  • This service will no longer run, but there will be alternative options for most customers. New service 200 will cover links between Leeds and Gomersal, and new service 251 will cover links between Birstall, Gomersal and Heckmondwike. More details are listed in this document under the new service numbers.

225    Brighouse - Cleckheaton

  • Due to very low usage, this service will no longer run.

228    Brighouse - Cleckheaton - Huddersfield

  • We’re introducing new service 228 to replace part of the 220 route. The new 228 service will run the same route as the 220 between Huddersfield and Cleckheaton, with off-peak journeys continuing to Brighouse.
  • During weekday peak times, the service will operate roughly every 90 minutes and is timed to cover college demand into Huddersfield. During Monday to Saturday daytime, off-peak, the service will run hourly.

229    Leeds - Gildersome - Birstall - Heckmondwike - Roberttown - Huddersfield

  • There will be some major changes made to the route and timetable of this service.
  • Following several requests for a more direct service, the 229 will be rerouted between Birstall and Heckmondwike to serve Smithies Moor Lane, Leeds Old Road, Nunroyd and Jeremy Lane. As a result the new 229 will not serve Bradford Road, Batley or Healey. New service 201 (with early morning and evening variant 201A) offers a replacement service from Leeds to Batley and Healey. Customers along Bradford Road can use services 281/283, together running up to every 15 minutes, with connections possible to/from Leeds by changing buses in Birstall (onto 229) or Batley (onto 201/201A).
  • The new 229 service will be increased to run up to every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime, between Leeds and Heckmondwike. It will continue to operate every 30 minutes to Huddersfield. This will mean a more frequent service for customers in Gildersome, Birstall and Heckmondwike. We’ll also add more evening journeys, and the late night journey on a Friday and Saturday night will be renumbered N9.

251    Birstall - Gomersal - Heckmondwike

253    Bradford - Birkenshaw - Cleckheaton - Liversedge - Mirfield - Dewsbury

  • This service will no longer run. There will be alternative options for most customers, although some journeys may require a change from one bus to another at a bus station or hub. We know that some of our customers prefer direct services where possible, however the 253 service does duplicate several other services on the bus network, and unfortunately the costs associated with running the service cannot be sustainably covered by revenue collected on board.
  • From Bradford to Tong Street, services 283, 425 and 427 combine to provide a bus up to every 15 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime.
  • From Birkenshaw through Cleckheaton to Liversedge, service 254 provides a bus every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime.
  • Along Sunnybank Road in Mirfield, new service 261 will provide an hourly bus with connections to Heckmondwike Hub.
  • Between Mirfield and Dewsbury, service 203 provides a bus every 30 minutes Monday to Saturday daytime.
  • A new school day service MG1 will replace the busy 0808hrs journey from Dewsbury to Mirfield Grammar School, using the existing 253 route. We have written to the headteacher at Mirfield Grammar to let them know about the change.

252/254    Leeds - New Farnley - Drighlington - Birkenshaw - Gomersal - Cleckheaton - Liversedge - Heckmondwike - Dewsbury Moor - Dewsbury

  • A new timetable is introduced with more even spacing between journeys, especially at peak times. More time has been added to Sunday journeys, to ensure we run as reliably as we can.
  • We’ll also serve Heckmondwike Hub in both directions, to help customers connect onto the enhanced 229 service and other services departing from there.
  • To make things simpler, the 252 is renumbered 254A.

255    Leeds - New Farnley - Drighlington - Birkenshaw - Gomersal - Cleckheaton - Scholes - Wyke - Halifax

  • Between Birkenshaw and Cleckheaton this service will no longer serve ‘West End’ estate, and instead it will follow the 254 route through Hill Top. New service 200 will cover ‘West End’ estate.

256    Bradford - Hunsworth - Cleckheaton - Scholes - Brighouse

  • This service is provided with financial support from WYCA (Metro). We are one of a number of operators that runs the service on their behalf, and following contract changes we’ll be running different journeys on this route to what we have been running. We continue to accept Arriva tickets on the journeys we run, and for customers wanting to travel across a number of operators the M-Card range of tickets is also available.
