Ken Skates, AM - Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, was in Ryhl, Denbighshire, yesterday (2 March) for the opening of a new £3million Arriva Buses Wales depot, which has been 12 months in construction. Arriva’s commitment to the environmental agenda was clear to see as staff showcased the ‘clean and green’ features of Rhyl Depot, as well as the prototype of a new high-tech double decker bus.

The new depot has been designed using best practise for heating, water and lighting. Environmentally friendly features include a solar ‘PV’ system generating electricity whenever the sun shines, LED lighting throughout the whole facility - enabling energy reductions by at least 60 per cent - and motion detection lighting. A new drive through bus washing machine operates a water recycling system, while sky lights in the workshop mean there will be no need to switch lights on in summer.

The Minister and guests at Rhyl Depot were invited to take a tour of a prototype of the ‘New Bus for Wales’ Sapphire double decker - 13 of which will be taking to the roads Wrexham in May this year. Visitors were also introduced to the new ONEArriva initiative at Ryhl Interchange, launched in partnership with Denbighshire County Council. This will see truly integrated ticketing between Arriva Trains Wales and Arriva Buses Wales.

The eco-friendly depot represents a signifiant investment in Rhyl. Arriva Buses Wales is a major employer in this part of North Wales and the depot has secured the future employment of more than 150 staff working on site.

Since 2009, Arriva Buses Wales has invested in excess of £25million in new buses, refurbishment of buses, introduction of free Wi-Fi and audio-visual stop annunciation, all in partnership with its local authority colleagues and the Welsh Government.

Arriva Buses Wales Managing Director, Michael Morton, said: “The opening of Rhyl Depot is a real milestone in our efforts to take environmentally-friendly action and look for new ways of reducing Arriva’s impact on the planet’s resources, as part of our wider strategy with Destination Green. We are very proud of the finished project and are committed to providing quality services, not only for our customers but for our staff so they can continue to thrive in Wales”.
