Helping to raise awareness of autism
Local schoolchildren now know more about autism and children who have the condition thanks to Arriva and driver John Cresswell.
The company provided a bus free for a day to visit schools during Autism Awareness Week in March and John drove it in his own time.
Rhyl-based John, whose wife Tracy works for Conwy Education’s Autism Outreach Team, said: “The double-decker made a great resource centre. Upstairs, videos about autism were being screened and downstairs was a classroom.”
The bus, with the outreach team on board, visited Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan, Ysgol Creuddyn and Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy. Sixth form students went on board at each school to learn more about autism and pick up material to use in workshops and at school assemblies.
“The idea is that they pass on what they’ve learned to younger children,” John said. “It helps them to understand why some children are different and to accept them as they are.”
