Local hero makes it big on bus
A hero boxing coach got the surprise of his life when he saw his face splashed all over a bus.
Bangor window cleaner Brian ‘Bach’ Williams was handed the honour by Arriva Buses Wales in recognition of his work in the community. The 70-year-old, from Maesgeirchen, was named Champion of Champions at last year’s Daily Post Your Champions Awards.
Arriva Buses Wales Bangor general manager Dafydd Williams said: “The idea for the surprise just came into my head. I’ve known Brian for 30 years and he does a lot of work for the community.
“I had seen pictures on other buses and thought it would be a good idea for us to thank Brian for his work by placing his photograph on a bus.”
Dafydd, 58, who also lives in Maesgeirchen, added: “I had seen the picture of Brian at the Trinity Mirror Local Hero awards and thought it would look good on the bus. I’ve known Brian for years.”
Brian is photographed with former Wales, Celtic and Arsenal player John Hartson who presented the Your Champions award.
It was not a complete surprise as Dafydd had to ask Brian for his permission. But Brian was shocked by the size of the finished article when he first clapped eyes on the newly-liveried bus this week.
Brian said: “I was very surprised. I was working when they called me. I am glad somebody is thinking about me. It’s an honour really.
“The awards I have were great and John Hartson is a gentleman. I think it’s nice to be recognised. I am only doing it for the kids and keeping them disciplined and off the street. It’s nice to see them getting trophies.”
