How to catch the bus
Follow our simple step-by-step guide to make catching a bus easy
Planning your journey
If you know where you want to go, you can use our handy tools to plan your journey ahead of time:
These tools will guide you door to door, with street maps to and from bus stops as well as route details. You can navigate from your current location or from another postcode, if you’re departing from different location. Both tools will give you a full choice of travel options, with step by step instructions.
Buying your tickets
There are a variety of different ways in which you can research and purchase your tickets:
- Our free m-ticket app (available on iPhone or Android)
- The website – tickets can either posted to you, or pushed to your m-ticket app
- Local stores displaying PayPoint or Payzone signs
- Arriva travel shops
- On-board, just ask your driver about the best ticket for your journey. You’ll need to pay in cash, but be aware that they may not always have change.
Catching the bus
If you’ve downloaded the Arriva Bus app, you can use the live map function you can track exactly where your bus is on route to save you from waiting at the bus stop. This function is also available on the website.
Once at the stop, as the bus approaches, you will see the number and final destination of the service on the front. To stop the bus, simply hold out your arm to signal to the driver and they will pull into the stop. Most of our buses have little or no entrance step, so it’s easy to get on even with a wheelchair, buggy or shopping trolley.
When on one of our buses, it is your time to enjoy. Many of our buses have free WiFi. To use it, just click on your WiFi settings to connect, open your browser to register, and start surfing. Should you wish to view video content, please be aware that streaming might be slow if there are lots of people logged-on.
If you are on a Sapphire bus, you may also notice plug sockets. These are there for your convenience so that you can charge your portable devises.
You can sit wherever you want once on-board, but we’d appreciate it if you gave priority to those with reduced mobility, disabilities, the elderly, pregnant, or people with pushchairs.
Getting off the bus
When you want the bus to stop, press the bell once in good time (bell pushes are fixed to vertical handrails throughout the bus). Please remain in your seat until the bus comes to a stop.
Take care to gather all your belongings when you disembark. If you do leave something you can contact us and we will do our best to reunite you with it.
If you’re unfamiliar with the area you might want to check where to catch the bus home again with the driver as you leave.
