Tamworth bus driver wins national award for excellence
A Tamworth bus driver has been hailed the best in the country at bus operator Arriva's annual Made a Difference Awards.
Brett Haskett, aged 41, who lives in the town and works at the company's local garage, won the Bus Driver of the Year accolade at a glittering ceremony at the De Vere Staverton Estate Hotel in Daventry on April 20.
Brett, who is engaged to be married and comes from Lichfield, has worked for the company for five years. His father is also a bus driver.
Each year Arriva buses opens voting for the Bus Driver of the Year award to its customers and members of the public. Brett was recognised as a bus champion for always going the extra mile for his passengers in providing outstanding customer service.
He said: "When I heard my name read out I was in shock. I'm chuffed to bits with this award - on top of the world.
"Bus drivers can get a lot of negativity. We often only hear from customers when they have a complaint, so I'm really touched that so many people took the time to ring in about something nice.
"I'm an outgoing person and I always try to do a little bit more in my job - at Christmas I dress up as Santa and I always try to help the older passengers on with their shopping."
Alistair Timmis, Arriva's General Manager in Tamworth, said: "We are absolutely delighted for Brett and we are exceedingly proud to have a driver of his calibre working for us in Tamworth.
"All of his colleagues and Arriva management applaud his hard work and dedication. We would like to thank our customers for taking the time to support him, which shows how much they appreciate his efforts.
"Brett is a true ambassador for Arriva in Tamworth and his excellence sets the standard for other companies to follow."
Arriva’s M.A.D Awards, now in their fifth year, celebrate the wealth of talent and dedication shown by the firm's UK workforce over the course of the last 12 months. The awards are a national recognition programme which look at all elements of the bus company, including engineering, depot management and back office functions.
