Bus manager to retire after clocking up 45 years’ service in Leicestershire

Arriva Area Manager Leicestershire Steve Smith retires this week after clocking up more than 45 years on the buses.

Steve began his career with Midland Red in the travel centre at Southgates Street in Leicester aged seventeen. He then became a Midlands Red Divisional Management Trainee before moving into planning bus networks across the county. To help understand the network and the business Steve also drove buses on a part time basis before then holding various depot management positions.

In his 45 years of service former Coalville Grammar pupil, Steve has managed every depot in Leicestershire and retires as Arriva Area Manager.

Steve, 62, who lives in Anstey, is well known for his love of speedway and raced speedway bikes in his youth at Hackney and Rye House. He plans to spend time helping at the Leicester Lions Speedway Club as well as volunteering at a local animal rescue centre.

Arriva Midlands (East) Area Managing Director, Simon Mathieson, said: “We wish Steve all the best for the future and thank him for all his hard work and commitment.

“He’s been a committed member of the team and devoted his career to keeping people moving in Leicestershire.”
