Details of service disruption in and around Whitby & Scarborough on Friday 1st May, owing to the Tour de Yorkshire cycling event.

On Friday 1st May 2015, passengers are advised of some expected significant disruption to our services in and around Whitby & Scarborough, owing to the Tour de Yorkshire cycling event.

Local road closures will be in place for the vast majority of the day, with more defined rolling road closures in place along the route, when the race passes through each area.

Whitby Town Centre will be completely closed to all traffic for around 2 hours on the afternoon and our bus services will be diverted and likely delayed as a result. Furthermore, once the race arrives in the area, more defined rolling road closures will be in place along the A169, A171 and Whitby Town Centre.

Unfortunately, due to the ambiguity of the event timings and the variability of the race, it is very difficult to inform passengers of precise journeys that are likely to be affected, however we are able to summarise journeys on each service that are likely to be affected.

Service 4

Between 14:30 and 16:30, Service 4 arrivals and departures from Whitby Bus Station will be unlikely to be able to serve the town centre and will operate as far as Chubb Hill/Bagdale roundabout, observing the stop on Chubb Hill as the terminus point instead.

When the race is in the area, buses will be unable to serve Chubb Hill & Downdinner Hill due to a further rolling road closure and will terminate near to Spring Vale/Upgang Lane.

Unfortunately, this arrangement may be subject to change, at short notice, if the police request the closure to be in place in a larger radius of the town centre.

Service P1, P2 (Whitby Park & Ride)

Between 14:30 and 16:30, Whitby Park & Ride will be subject to delay and will operate normal route as far as Spring Vale/St Hildas Terrace roundabout. As Whitby Town Centre will be closed, buses will therefore be unable to serve St Hildas Terrace or Whitby Bus Station and will instead operate via Chubb Hill & Downdinner Hill to Mayfied Road, before resuming normal route back to the Park & Ride site.

At around 15:30, when the race is in the area, buses will be unable to serve Chubb Hill & Downdinner Hill due to a further rolling road closure and will terminate near to Spring Vale/Upgang Lane.

Unfortunately, this arrangement may be subject to change, at short notice, if the police request the closure to be in place in a larger radius of the town centre.

Service X93

Between 14:30 and 16:30, journeys around Whitby at the time will be unable to serve Whitby Bus Station and will instead, operate into Whitby Park & Ride site where passengers can board and alight the service. Connections can be made to/from Whitby Park & Ride buses to get to the town centre.

From this point, journeys towards Scarborough will operate via Mayfield Road and A171 omitting the town centre. Journeys around 15:30 may be subject to a further delay around Whitby as the race passes through.

There will be a more significant disruption to the service for northbound journeys from Scarborough at 1350, 1420, 1450, 1520 and 1550 as these journeys will be required to divert via the A170 to Pickering and the A169 to Whitby due to a complete closure of the A171 between Whitby & Scarborough. This will mean that for around 2-3 hours on the afternoon, we will be unable to serve any areas between Scarborough & Whitby, northbound.

We have also been instructed that as lots of spectators are expected to be in the Robin Hood's Bay area for the afternoon of the race, if it is deemed unsafe by police for traffic to operate through, we will be requested to omit the area at very short notice.

Service 94 & 95

Between 15:30 and 16:30, Service 94 and 95 are expected to be suspended in full and will not operate whilst the race is in the area, due to rolling road closures preventing access to the vast majority of the route.

Services will be reinstated as soon as roads reopen for use.

As we try to anticipate any other issues, it is very diffcult to provide accurate disruption information at this time. We will have Arriva staff in place around the town centre, who will be able to give you information regarding where you can catch your bus, plus provide details on any short notice diversions or affects on services that are not described here.

We apologise in advance for any disruption this event may cause to our services, but we will be working hard to ensure that the vast majority of services operate as normal before and after the event.
