There will be changes to some services in County Durham and Hartlepool from Sunday 5th January 2020 to provide new links, improve punctuality and better match capacity with demand.

All of the changes are described in detail below. Simply click on the links to download new timetables for each service. Printed leaflets are available on buses and from the Bishop Auckland and Durham bus stations.

Sapphire 6: Durham – Tudhoe – Spennymoor – Bishop Auckland – West Auckland – Evenwood – Cockfield – Barnard Castle

There will be minor alterations to the Monday to Friday schedule because Bishop Auckland College has changed its finish time.

The journey at 1613 from Framwellgate Moor (1624 from Durham) will extend to Staindrop and Barnard Castle arriving there at 1750 and 1803 respectively. As a result, the bus at 1612 from Durham will finish in West Auckland at 1719.

In addition, the journey at 1655 from Bishop Auckland College will start in West Auckland at 1643 and will not serve the college grounds. Alternative buses are available on the 1, 5 and 86 from the college to Bishop Auckland town centre where connections can be made with the 6. There will be no changes to the morning journey that runs into the college grounds.

Sapphire 22: Durham – Thornley – Wheatley Hill – Shotton Colliery – Peterlee – Dalton Park – New Seaham – Ryhope – Sunderland

There will be later buses between Durham and Peterlee on Mondays to Saturdays to replace Scarlet Band service 58A, which will be withdrawn between Wheatley Hill and Peterlee. The additional journeys will be as follows:

2148 from Durham to Peterlee via Thornley, Wheatley Hill and Shotton Colliery. This bus will then continue from Peterlee as the 2234 to Sunderland via Dalton Park, New Seaham and Ryhope
2205 from Peterlee to Durham via Shotton Colliery, Wheatley Hill and Thornley, which will run as an extension of the existing 2121 from Sunderland
2305 from Peterlee to Thornley via Shotton Colliery and Wheatley Hill, which will run as an extension of the existing 2221 from Sunderland

Connections will be available with new service 58 at Wheatley Hill for customers who currently use the 58A to travel from Peterlee or Shotton Colliery to Cassop, Quarrington Hill, Kelloe or Coxhoe.

Service 56: Durham – Coxhoe – West Cornforth – Ferryhill Station – Ferryhill – Kirk Merrington – Coundon – Bishop Auckland

This service will have a revised timetable to improve punctuality, with most buses running up to ten minutes earlier or later.

Following customers’ requests, Monday to Saturday daytime journeys will revert to their old route at Stobb Cross, which means that buses travelling towards both Durham and Bishop Auckland will perform an anti-clockwise loop of Garmondsway Road and Lichfield Road. However, evening and Sunday buses will continue to run via Linden Road and will not serve Garmondsway Road or Lichfield Road.

A small number of Saturday morning journeys will be withdrawn due to low usage. Alternative buses will be available for most customers, especially between Coxhoe and Durham where the 56, 57, 57A and X12 will continue to provide a frequent service in both directions.

Service 57/57A: Durham – Bowburn – Coxhoe – Kelloe – Wingate or The Trimdons – Hartlepool

This service will have a completely revised route and timetable. This is to improve punctuality and replace the Monday to Saturday daytime journeys on Scarlet Band service 58/58A between Durham and Hartlepool.

The 57 will extend from Kelloe to Hartlepool via Quarrington Hill, Cassop, Thornley, Wheatley Hill, Wingate, Station Town, Hutton Henry (towards Durham only) and Hart. In Kelloe, buses will run via Woodland Crescent and Morley Crescent in both directions. In Hartlepool, all journeys will serve the Interchange as well as the stops on Victoria Road to provide connections with trains.

The 57A will continue to run between Durham and Hartlepool, but via Kelloe (Sharon Avenue, not Woodland Crescent or Morley Crescent) as well as Trimdon Grange, Trimdon Village and Deaf Hill. As a result, buses will not serve the stops at the Red Lion and Belgrave Court in Coxhoe. Alternative journeys are available on the X12 for most customers in this area. In Hartlepool, Monday to Saturday daytime buses will serve the Interchange as well as the stops on Victoria Road to provide connections with trains. However, evening journeys will start/finish on Victoria Road as now.

The 57 and 57A will work together to provide a half-hourly Monday to Saturday daytime service between Durham and Kelloe. The 57 will run via Bowburn Hall while the 57A will serve Bowburn Estate as now. All buses will run via High Shincliffe, but they will not serve Whinney Hill.
