From Tuesday 7th April 2015, the 553 will extend from the Freeman Hospital to Battle Hill replacing Nexus service 3

In July last year we launched service 553 giving you a bus up to every 30 minutes between the Regent Centre, Gosforth and the Freeman Hospital. We also diverted commuter service 554 to run via the Freeman Hospital, further improving links at peak times.

Both are now popular services and we have received a lot of feedback about them. In particular:

  • You like the direct link from the hospital to the Regent Centre because of the convenient connections that are available with other services
  • You like the dedicated silver buses that operate service 553 because they are easy to identify
  • You like the bus stop directly outside the entrance of the hospital, as it is more convenient than the one on Freeman Road
  • You need the 553 to run earlier on a morning because you still find it difficult to get to the hospital before 0900
  • You would like us to extend the 553 towards Walkergate and Wallsend, as it is difficult to get there by bus or metro from the Regent Centre and Gosforth
  • You would like service 554 to run directly between Gosforth and Four Lane Ends again, as it takes a long time to go via the Freeman Hospital

 

We’re acting on this feedback by making some improvements to services 553 and 554 from Tuesday 7th April 2015. All of the changes are described below. Simply click on the links to download the new timetables or pop into our travel shop in the Newcastle Haymarket Bus Station for more information.

Service 553

We’re extending this service to replace the Nexus 3 between the Freeman Hospital and Battle Hill. This will provide new regular links from Battle Hill, Wallsend, Walkergate and Cochrane Park to Gosforth and the Regent Centre.

Buses will continue to run every 30 minutes on Monday to Friday daytimes between the Regent Centre, Gosforth and the Freeman Hospital. However, there will be minor changes to the timetable to improve punctuality. Alternate journeys will extend from the Freeman Hospital to Battle Hill, providing an hourly service on this section of the route.

At Monday to Friday commuter times, buses will run up to every 30 minutes along the whole route, making it easier for you to get to work and home again. We’re also introducing some earlier morning journeys from the Regent Centre to the Freeman Hospital, arriving there for 0700 and 0800.

On Saturday daytimes, buses will run hourly between the Freeman Hospital and Battle Hill. At the beginning and end of the day, a small number of journeys will extend to/from Gosforth and the Regent Centre.

We have painted another vehicle into our dedicated livery for service 553, so you still find it easy to spot your bus. However, a small number of journeys will be run by our normal blue or grey vehicles, so please remember to check the number and destination of the bus before you get on board.

All service 553 journeys will use the stop directly outside the entrance of the Freeman Hospital. As a result, buses travelling towards Cochrane Park, Walkergate, Wallsend and Battle Hill will no longer stop on Freeman Road.

Service 554

To speed up journeys for the majority of people who use this service, buses will run directly between Gosforth and Four Lane Ends via Church Road and Benton Park Road, omitting the Freeman Hospital.

As a result, buses will depart from Regent Centre and Gosforth High Street up to five minutes earlier or later than now. There are no changes to the times at Four Lane Ends, Balliol Business Park or Quorum Business Park.

 

Coming soon, we're adding more buses to the X18 this summer, making it easier for you to explore the spectacular Northumberland Coast. Watch out for details of the new timetable, which starts on Sunday 24th May 2015.
