Travelling around Loftus
Loftus is situated in North Yorkshire, just a few miles from the East coast. Sitting at the gateway to the North York Moors, this former mining town has much to offer, with woodland walks and country lanes, a modern leisure centre and some fine examples of Victorian architecture.
Loftus is easily accessible by road and Arriva buses operate in the area, with routes to nearby towns, such as Guisborough and Skinningrove, as well as regular services to Redcar, Middlesbrough and Whitby.
Modern-day Loftus was forged in the ironstone mines, and you’ll get a glimpse of what life was really like for the miners at Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum. Explore the candlelit tunnels, stare into the bottomless ventilation shaft and see the archaic tools that the miners used to carve out the rock.
For a fun day out for the kids, why not visit The Play Factory, an indoor children's adventure centre with soft play areas, climbing frames and ball pools. Or take a leap of faith and head to the Airtime Trampoline Park, offering thrills and spills for children of all ages.
Loftus is within easy reach of the North York Moors, so if you’re a fan of the great outdoors, you’re in luck. Hummersea Beach is just a few miles from the town centre, a local nature reserve with sweeping clifftops and a gorgeous white-shingle beach. And a little further afield, you’ll find The Moors National Park Centre, with historic buildings, woodland trails and plenty of activities for the kids.
As the sun goes down, this old mining town comes to life, with a selection of bars, cafés and lively nightspots.
