Travelling around Darlington

Recently voted the 7th best place to live in the UK, Darlington has a lot going for it. Boasting a pedestrianised town centre that leads to a market square, flanked by attractive Victorian terraced streets, this market town is a lovely mix of old and new.

With four national parks within an hour’s drive of the centre, outdoorsy folk will find plenty to keep them entertained. Culture lovers will appreciate the theatres and museums, many of which explore the town’s proud heritage as a railway town.

With trains to Newcastle running every 30 minutes and trains to London every two hours, Darlington is remarkably well-connected. Arriva buses run a huge selection of routes in and out of the centre. Jump on a bus and visit Durham, Stockton and Middlesbrough, as well as numerous local stops within the town of Darlington itself.

Darlington town centre

Darlington’s world-famous railway heritage is a source of fierce pride amongst the locals and rightly so. Pay a visit to the fascinating Darlington Railway Centre and Museum and check out the selection of vintage steam locomotives on display before heading to David Mach’s life-size train sculpture, built from a whopping 185,000 bricks.

The compact town centre is one of the things that makes Darlington unique. Think popular high streets stores sandwiched in between unique independent boutiques and quality markets and you will get the right idea. The modern retail complex at The Cornmill Shopping Centre has over 40 stores, including cafés and restaurants.

History lovers can explore the gorgeous Raby Castle, with its picturesque grounds that host seasonal events, including a Christmas market. Culture vultures have ample opportunity to get their fix thanks to the Edwardian Civic Centre, the Darlington Hippodrome and the area’s newest music and comedy venue, The Forum
