Travelling around Coalville
A busy market town, Coalville is a charming place that displays beautiful buildings that provide an insight into its history. Not content with just looking wonderful, the area is filled with plenty of things to do and was the birthplace of the Action Man figures, one of the most popular children’s toys around. It once produced Star Wars and Care Bears figures too.
When you’re in Coalville, you’ll find there’s plenty of public transport to help you get around. Arriva bus services travel far and wide, meaning that you can go to Leicester, Ibstock, Loughborough, and many more places in the surrounding areas.
As the name suggests, Coalville was once a thriving mining town, whose fortunes boomed after the birth of the Industrial Revolution. The development of the first Rocket steam engine took place here and deep coal mining was pioneered by William Stenson in nearby Whitwick. The Rocket, which is now on display at the London Science Museum, was used as the template for steam engines for over 150 years.
