Back to school for an Arriva London Heritage Fleet bus
There can’t be any more rewarding tasks than having the opportunity to teach children and give them an experience they have never had before, and this is just what Terry Linger, a senior garage supervisor at Arriva, and the Arriva London Heritage Fleet team had last week. They were invited to The Crescent Primary School in Selhurst, a suburb of Croydon, to show some young school children what it’s like to ride on a big red double decker bus.
Three reception classes from the school (Gruffalo, Elmer and Kipper) were given the chance to explore the bus, and then had the opportunity to ask the driver about the bus and hear how the bus goes to ‘sleep’ and what happens to it if it’s broken.
Afterwards, each class stayed on the bus and sang their version of the famous song ‘The wheels on the bus’ and then had their picture taken beside the bus with their class.
Arriva London were delighted to have the opportunity to introduce these young children to what it is like to be on a big red bus, what it’s like to be so high up, and how big the steps are for five to seven year olds.
As Terry said:
"It was great to see all of the childrens' excited faces and to have the opportunity to answer their questions. They were all so well behaved and sang their songs with such enthusiasm. It’s really good for Arriva to be able to give to the local community, and allow the children a great experience that hopefully they will remember for a long time."
In preparation for the visit, each child had made their own ticket which they handed in to Terry as they got on board. Terry then explained that the bus, Routemaster RM 2217, is an historic bus, not only as it is fifty years old but also because it was the last old style Routemaster to run a commercial service in London on route 159. One of the more exciting facts for the children was that it had been a Harry Potter bus at one stage.
Annabel, one of the teachers at The Crescent Primary, had this to say:-
"What a fantastic experience we all had. It was the first time the children had been on an old Routemaster bus and they learnt so much! We were all so excited when Terry drove the bus into the playground. Thank you so much Arriva for such an amazing opportunity. We really appreciated it. A huge thank you from The Crescent!"
