Northumberland and Tyne & Wear changes

From 3rd September 2023

We’re making changes to services within South East Northumberland and North Tyneside from Sunday 3rd September.

Regrettably, following a review of financial performance, Services 51, 52, 53, 54, 55 and part of Service 553 will be withdrawn. We wish to thank our passengers for their custom over the years and details of the replacement options for passengers on each of these services are shown below.

Additionally, we’ve been working with Northumberland County Council to improve services within South East Northumberland and as a result, we’re pleased to offer a new and improved Service 434, along with additional evening journeys on Services X7 and X8. Also, we’re pleased to be able to provide peak time journey options linking Stannington to Newcastle, plus a vast number of punctuality improvements on a service-by-service basis.

Service 43 – Newcastle to Cramlington and Morpeth

A further review of punctuality for this service has resulted in an additional vehicle being added to the service to ensure a more robust timetable is in place at peak times Monday to Friday. As a result, a revised timetable will come into effect.

There will also be some slight changes on a Saturday; however, the current weekend frequency continues to remain in place.

Service 44 – Newcastle to Dinnington

A further review of punctuality for this service has resulted in an additional vehicle being added to the service to ensure a more robust timetable is in place at peak times Monday to Friday. As a result, a revised timetable will come into effect.

There will also be some slight changes on a Saturday; however the current weekend frequency continues to remain in place.

Additionally, following discussions with Northumberland County Council, we are pleased to announce that we will be extending 1 journey each way between Dinnington and Stannington on a Monday to Saturday.

Service 45 – Newcastle to Dinnington

There will also be some slight changes on a Saturday; however, the current weekend frequency continues to remain in place.

Service 51 – Newcastle to Whitley Bay

Service 52 – Ashington and Cramlington to Newcastle

Service 53 – North Shields to Cramlington

Service 55 – Newcastle to Forest Hall

Service 57A – Ashington to North Shields

Following the completion of the new North Shields Interchange, this service is revised to terminate and commence from here using stand C. The current departure times remain the same, but stops at the eastern end of the town centre will no longer be served,

Service 306 – Newcastle to Whitley Bay and Blyth

A slight adjustment to the Monday to Friday 1350 departure from Newcastle, this will now terminate in Whitley Bay Town Centre and no longer serve the Seafront. Additionally, the 1446 departure from Whitley Bay Seafront will now commence in the Town Centre at 1456 and operate 5 minutes later throughout to Newcastle.

Service 553 - Regent Centre and Freeman Hospital

This service will now operate between Regent Centre and Freeman Hospital only. Nexus are looking to secure journeys between Wallsend and Freeman Hospital at peak times, these services however will not continue through to Regent Centre and a change of bus would be required. Service X7 – Newcastle to Blyth via Seghill and Seaton Deaval.

A further review of punctuality to ensure a more robust timetable is in place at especially at peak times on Monday to Fridays and Sundays. As a result, a revised timetable will come into effect.

Additionally, following discussions with Northumberland County Council, we are pleased to announce that a new later evening journey will be added between Blyth and Seghill departing at 2313.

Service X8 – Newcastle to Blyth via Cramlington and South Beach

A further review of punctuality to ensure a more robust timetable is in place at especially at peak times on Monday to Fridays and Sundays. As a result, a revised timetable will come into effect.

Additionally, following discussions with Northumberland County Council, we are pleased to announce that new later evening journeys will be added, departing Blyth at 2044/2144 and returning from Newcastle at 2145/2245.

Service X9 – Newcastle to Blyth via Cramlington and Cowpen

A further review of punctuality to ensure a more robust timetable is in place at especially at peak times on Monday to Fridays and Sundays. As a result, a revised timetable will come into effect. Following customber feedback, we are introducing a new Monday to Friday AM journey departing Blyth at 0548 and arriving into Newcastle for 0650.

Service X15 – Newcastle to Morpeth, Alnwick and Berwick

Following a revision to the Berwick Academy School Day, the afternoon journey from Berwick will now operate 5 minutes later departing the Rail Station at 1510 and operate 5 minutes later as far as Morpeth.

New Service 434 – Widdrington Station to Bedlington Station

Arriva are pleased to announce that following successful tendering exercise by Northumberland County Council, we will now be taking over operation of this service. 

As part of the change in operator, this service will see a revised timetable introduced and a route revision to improve rail connections for customers. 

The service will follow the current route between Bedlington Station and Ashington Bus Station from here the route is diverted to serve the proposed location of Ashington Rail Station before continuing to Linton and additionally Widdrington Station.

A revised timetable with journeys now operating up to hourly with both earlier and later buses than present will be introduced. Please see attached timetable for full details. 

We are also pleased to announce that the current range of Arriva Multi Journey products such as Day and Weekly Tickets will be available to purchase and use on this service.
