Travelling around Tonbridge
With an ancient castle, a rich history and beautiful riverside setting, the Kentish town of Tonbridge is the perfect place to while away a day or two. A market town since the Middle Ages, this pretty place is great for families. It’s also a fascinating area for literary lovers, thanks to its associations with Jane Austen.
If you’re planning to pay a visit (or you’re one of the town’s residents), there’s plenty to see and do. As you might expect, there are plenty of great outdoor spaces in the “garden of England”, as well as theatres, castles, historic churches and more.
Arriva buses operate in the area and run regular services to Maidstone, West Malling, Hildenborough and more.
Ightham Mote, Kent
During your visit, you can delve back into Old England and Malling, a place filled with cultural and historical interest. From idyllic manor houses and a postcard-pretty castle to picturesque villages nestled into undulating woods and fields, the borough also holds some intriguing links to the novelist Jane Austen.
But the history doesn’t stop there. Take time to visit the megalithic Coldrum Stones at Trottiscliffe (pronounced ‘Troze-ley), St Mary’s Abbey in West Malling, and one of Kent's most charismatic buildings, the moated manor house, Ightham Mote.
At Aylesford Priory, the Friars offer a fascinating insight into life within the centuries-old order of the Carmelites, and for a fun-filled family outing, head to the Hop Farm and experience a range of fascinating features and wonders.
