Travelling around Tonbridge
With an ancient castle, a rich history and beautiful riverside setting, the Kentish town of Tonbridge is the perfect place to while away a day or two. A market town since the Middle Ages, this pretty place is great for families. It’s also a fascinating area for literary lovers, thanks to its associations with Jane Austen.
If you’re planning to pay a visit (or you’re one of the town’s residents), there’s plenty to see and do. As you might expect, there are plenty of great outdoor spaces in the “garden of England”, as well as theatres, castles, historic churches and more.
Arriva buses operate in the area and run regular services to Maidstone, West Malling, Hildenborough and more.
Haysden Country Park is the perfect place for long walks with the family, particularly if you have dogs! This local nature reserve is home to freshwater lakes, marshland and woodland, making it ideal for a spot of bird or wildlife watching. There’s also a handy café offering snacks and hot beverages too.
The legendary Tonbridge Castle is considered to be one of the finest examples of a Motte and Bailey Castle in the country. The Tonbridge Castle Gatehouse Tour gives visitors a chance to explore the basement and armoury, as well as sea views from the battlements.
Tonbridge was the first town in Kent to launch a walking trails app in commemoration of the First World War. There’s also an Austen walking tour which tells the story of Jane Austen through the buildings that meant something to the Austen family – a great adventure for literary lovers.
