Di Brookes

Name: Diane Brookes

Where are you from: I am from Derby. I live in a suburb called Alvaston which is where I do most of my driving. I’ve lived there all my life. I love the city of Derby, as it is not too big, just the right size

How long have you worked for Arriva: I’ve been at Arriva this time around coming up to 9 years. My first spell, I started back in 1988 with Derby City Transport. I was only 21 at the time. I was then with them through their various transformations right until they became Arriva. I then left in 1997 to go and work at the Royal Mail. I was a postman for two years and then transferred to their armoured car division until I was made redundant in 2006. I spent a short time working for Kings on armoured vehicles before returning to Arriva. The rest is history

Routes you currently drive: I am on the Alvaston rota, which takes me around where I live. I am regularly doing routes 44, 45, 40(A), 41(A) and 43. I chose this rota because I know the area very well and am familiar with the local people and I/m comfortable in my knowledge of the area. I get on well with all the passengers and have a good repartee with them

What is your favourite thing about being a bus driver: I enjoy being a bus driver because I love interacting with the customers and showing an interest in what they have to say. People fascinate me and I think I show an interest and this develops the passenger’s relationship with me as their driver.

When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up: My first ambition whilst growing up was to be a tank driver in the army. However, once I passed my driving test I vowed never to drive anything larger than a mini. Now I drive double deckers and scanias for a living. Also, I would have loved to be a florist. However, I know I didn’t have the artistic talent to achieve that ambition.

How does it feel to be nominated as an Arriva Superhero: It’s pretty amazing, but I wouldn’t describe myself as a superhero. I feel I’m just doing my job to the best of my ability. A smile and a little chat goes a long way to cheering up all our days.
