Green Line waves goodbye to its greatest ever commuter after thirty-three fabulous years

Green Line helped one of its most long-standing and valued customers mark the end of an era last week as she undertook her final few journeys on-board the Luton to London coach, following an impressive 33 years of commuting.

Jacquelyn Andrews, who has spent the last three decades working as a legal PA who worked in central London before deciding to take up a new role in St Albans, was surprised on her morning journey on 20th August by the Green Line team who wanted to give her a huge thank you for being one of their most frequent and loyal passengers.

Jacqui was presented with a card, flowers and champagne as she made her way to London for the final time, but she was taken aback when it was also unveiled that the coach she was travelling on had been named in her honour.

Linsey Frostick, general manager at Arriva Luton, said: “Jacqui has been the perfect passenger, and it’s been a pleasure having her on-board for all these years. We can’t quite believe it’s coming to an end, but we know how much she likes a celebration, so it seemed only right we do something to show her our gratitude. Now she’ll always be part of the Green Line team. We really hope we’ll be seeing her again, even if it is no longer on the daily commute.”

Jacqui explained her sorrow that her time with Green Line was coming to an end, adding: “I will miss the sunrises to my left on the M1, my commuting friends, the familiarity of the journey and the roads I love, the commuter banter and the laughter.  The chance to relax, the kips and the wonderful scenery to take in. It has been one hell of a journey and I have loved it.

“I have travelled with so many strangers that have become friends over the years. Oh and the drivers, we all have our favourites, but they too become part of your working day and I would like to say thank you to every single one of them that drove me safely day in, day out. I am looking forward to my new role but I really mean that if I could have got the coach still to work, I would have, there’s no way I will enjoy driving myself as much as I enjoyed being driven by the lovely Green Line team.”

Jacqui initially opted for the coach as the stop was outside her very first office on Buckingham Palace Road. She added: “One thing that has never changed in all this time is that the coach is always reliable, and never gets stopped by a leaf on the line!  My brother started working in London the same time as I did in 1986. We both tried the train and we both tried the coach. I found the train stressful due to the amount of people, the unreliability and the fact that if you add all the time together for parking, the tube and walking to and from platforms, it is actually not any quicker but way more expensive.

“Having commuted by coach for more than 30 years, it would be foolish to look at it as anything other than your time to relax, to have 40 winks, read, listen to the radio, in more modern times, watch programme on your devices and talk to your fellow commuters and the drivers. The other great thing is, unlike the trains, if there is an issue on the roads, there is always a plan b or even c so we can go a different way to get to work or go home. The flexibility of it being a 24/7 service has been amazing too. I was never looking at my watch for the last one home. This has definitely added to my ability to party through the night!

“You also feel like you are getting your money’s worth. I am sure train commuters would not share that feeling. Guaranteed a seat, wifi, charging point and all for a much more reasonable cost. Reliable, the ability to follow progress on the Arriva app and a nice quiet run into work and home again. I would encourage anyone who commutes by train and where it is feasible to give the coach a try. You will save money and stress!  It is a far more peaceful experience and if you look at it that you are getting paid to relax whilst getting in and out of work it makes you feel totally unresentful towards your commute. How else could I have done it happily for the 33 years?!”
