Hexham Gaol was ordered to be built in June 1330, making it the oldest purpose-built prison in England. The Gaol held prisoners captured in Hexhamshire, the area ruled over by the Archbishop of York. The building was taken over and used for a variety of purposes, but by the mid-1970s the building was in a bad state. Major repairs were undertaken, and the building reopened in 1980 as a museum and tourist information centre.

Housesteads is a fascinating tourist attraction in North East England. It is the most complete Roman fort in Britain, set where Hadrian’s Wall climbs to the top of a dramatic escarpment. There are some stunning views to enjoy from the walls of this ancient fortress, and plenty to interest the whole family.
