Top ten Yorkshire sayings announced
Yorkshire Day saw Arriva reveal the top ten Yorkshire sayings as nominated by bus users across the county.
The sayings were launched at Batley Mill on Saturday, 1st August along with two of the 17 new buses being introduced into service.
We had originally appealed for suggestions to preserve the region’s heritage by displaying the top ten Yorkshire sayings on our fleet of new buses.
The activity aimed to showcase the wit and wisdom of Yorkshire by using our fleet of 17 brand new buses being intoduced into services in Dewsbury, Batley, Birstall and Bradford, an investment of over £2million.
The top ten sayings were:
Sit thissen dahn an' tell me abaht it
See all, 'ear all, say nowt. Eat all, sup all,
pay nowt. An' if th'ivver does owt for
nowt, allus do it for thissen
Ee, by gum
Tha’ can allus tell a Yorkshireman,
but tha’ can’t tell ‘im much
Well, Ah'll go to t’foot of ahr stairs
It’s neither nowt nor summat
Put t'wood in t‘oil
Wheere ther’s muck, ther’s brass
An' Ah'll tell thi that fer nowt
Along with Arriva personnel the event was attended by Barrie Rhodes from the Yorkshire Dialect Society, and two of the successful nominees, Jim Wood and Adam Smith.
Our 17 new buses will operate on the 281,282 and 283 services, offering passengers greater comfort and security. They are all low-floor easy access, and with engines that meet the latest Euro standards are even better for the environment.
