Get 'out and about' with The Hepworth Wakefield and Arriva Yorkshire
Arriva is the latest partner to support the Out & About project that is helping children aged 5-11 and their families, from ex-coalmining communities in Wakefield experience Yorkshire’s artistic and natural heritage.
Enabled by generous support from the Ernest Cook Trust, one of the UK's leading educational charities, the Out & About project has been developed by The Hepworth Wakefield in partnership with schools across the Wakefield District and will include visits to the new gallery, Brimham Rocks, Nostell Priory and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Delighted
Natalie Walton, Head of Learning at The Hepworth Wakefield said: “We’re delighted to have Arriva Yorkshire on board supporting this project and helping local families explore the region’s art and landscape, in particular the work of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore, who were both born in the Wakefield District and drew inspiration from the Yorkshire landscape.”
Maxine Smart, Deputy Head from Carlton Primary said: “Schools often struggle to gain the financial support required to offer visits and trips to arts venues, which are often viewed as a luxury rather than an essential part of education. The Hepworth’s Out & About project provides a fantastic opportunity for our pupils and their families to enjoy a full programme of activities that we would otherwise be unable to offer.”
Yorkshire's great attractions
Nigel Featham, Managing Director for Arriva Yorkshire said: “With so much to do in our local area, we’re so pleased to be able to work with The Hepworth Wakefield and help spread the word about Yorkshire’s great attractions. We hope more families will see the great value of catching the bus for great days out in Wakefield and see just how accessible these attractions are.”
Since opening on 21 May 2011, The Hepworth Wakefield, designed by David Chipperfield Architects, has already welcomed over 285,000 visitors, exceeding its initial 150,000 annual visitor target. At 5,000 square metres, it is the largest purpose-built art gallery to open in Britain since the Hayward Gallery in London.
